The black pine was catching the early sun nicely-enough, but the contrast was lost in color. So I went to b/w. I need to remember how much better b/w can be for some kinds of images. For example, the black rock wall can't be lightened up in color without wrecking the shadows elsewhere. But because it has a lot of blue in it, in b/w it's possible to bring up the blue and thus lighten it without changing anything in the pine.
