Here's the 2015 Hilina Pali Winter Solstice shot.

 

It's very different from the previous ones. This year, the weather was bad. Rainy, windy, clouds blowing through. Cold.

 

I was working with the same setup that's been effective in other years -- a short telephoto, tripod-mounted, framing the sun and what it was doing to the clouds and ocean. Here's 2014 and 2013.

 

But it just wasn't working. The sun wasn't cooperating. I was disappointed (and wet, and cold). Ruth asked me to take one of her sitting and writing (which is what she'd been doing) so I took off the tele, mounted the super-wide, took a couple of her, and then realized that the super-wide was the lens of choice. So I worked with it for a few minutes, hand-held, and thus the 2015 Winter Solstice Hilo Daily Image.
