I was trying to grab something early (as usual, on Sundays when I'm headed out for a long one). I don't think I've ever caught a sunrise behind the Areca, but here's one.

I spent some time working with the Areca blacked out (the camera's default exposure responded to the sunrise, leaving not much  detail on the palm. And then I killed it more, making the trunk, seeds, and fronds entirely black. Then I thought that seemed very much a cliché, so instead I brought up the palm's detail (it was there all along, of course, thanks to this amazing camera).

Also, I liked the way the clouds caught the shape of the fronds.

All in all, a success when I wasn't expecting one. When I went out, I thought I'd be giving you one of those meh not-quite-light-yet Sunday morning HDIs.

The reason that the sunrise is behind the Areca is that it's nearly Solstice, and the sun is as far to the south as it ever gets. Tomorrow we're going to be at Hilina Pali for Solstice sunrise there (as always) and so the HDI will be from Hilina Pali, not from the yard. I won't process it until we get back, so it's going to be late.
