Ancillary Image

(fleshing out a particular Daily Image)

What's interesting about this shot is that there's ocean in the foreground, and then up to the left, on Mauna Loa's slope, you can see the famous CO2 monitoring station (that cluster of buildings) at about 11,000' elevation. And if you look closely, you can see a number of ecological zones, ranging from coastal, to lower elevations, to the 'ohi'a forest and lava. The horizon in the center is at about 6,000'. The wonders of long-lens compression! With anything other than a long lens, the background would have receded so far that it would have lost all detail. I do love long lenses, as any of you who've been following the HDI know.
