It's a 3:45 AM shot of my first running shoe. I bought it at a sporting goods shop in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, in January 1974. That's when I started running.

 

Leather, gum rubber sole, no cushioning. I thought them truly great shoes.

 

In a few minutes I head up the Saddle Road for the 72 K walk in celebration of my 72nd birthday (which is about a week away, but carpe diem and all that). When I got these shoes, I could jog about a mile. But it was a beginning.
