I've been exposing lava, landscaping. I uncovered the top part of what you're seeing here in 2009 or 2010, and uncovered the lower, red portion yesterday. The newly-exposed lava (from Mauna Loa) has been underground for a least a few centuries. It will turn black over the next year or so. This HDI shows black and red. I exposed that lava in 2011 but filled in cracks with cinders, which kept the lava from oxidizing (if that's the chemical process).

 

As you can see, it's raining again.
