About a month ago I noticed a dead rat on one of the lava outcroppings in the yard. In my previous career as a professor I taught archaeology and always loved one of its subdisciplines -- taphonomy. So because the carcass was causing no trouble where it was, I left it alone. I've been looking at it every few days, and noticing the various waves of insects working on it.
And . . . well, Head Shot Week. Nothing else to say, except that this is the rat's eye socket.
