Here's a young man from Foueda Island, in the Lau Lagoon of Malaita, Solomon Islands. Tri-X @ASA1200 (Acufine developer) made with Nikon F and 35mm f/2 lens. Notice that's just plain old "F," as in the original Nikon SLR.

I made the picture in 1968 and developed the film in a leaf hut in the lagoon, and printed it later, in Cambridge. This is a casual picture of the print, behind glass. I made the print very carefully, and 45 years later it's still in excellent condition, and hangs in the Hilo house. It was exhibited at an art show at Stanford in 2004, and was used as the cover for the journal Anthropology and Humanism, in 1995. It was very hard to print -- all that black. I don't remember how many prints I made and discarded before getting what I wanted, but it was probably half a dozen at least. There are some real advantages to digital photography!
