It's rainy this morning, as you can see. And there's a potential hurricane aimed at us.

Today's an unhappy day here on Wailuku Drive. Only a few minutes after I uploaded yesterday's HDI, I got the news from Kansas that our Airedale Radar (he didn't make the move to Hilo, for complicated reasons) who was living happily on a farm with Lisa Clark, a professional dog trainer, slipped into his old impulsive ways, ran into a rural road at just the wrong time, and was killed instantly by a truck. So we're sad -- all of us, but perhaps Lisa most of all. Lisa wrote and illustrated books for children, about Radar and other animals.

I searched the house for his leather leash, which I put away somewhere, but I couldn't find it. I though it would make a good HDI. Then we looked for his first little blue collar, but couldn't find that either. They are both somewhere in the house.

I got this shell on Malaita, Solomon Islands, in 1968. It's traveled around with me and spent winters outside in Western NY. It's one tough shell.

Radar used to nudge it around, and occasionally threatened to chew on it, but never did.  So I decided it would make a good HDI, because I associate it with Radar. After Radar came to Colden in December 2012, he was outside with me most mornings when I was making the Colden Daily Image. Sometimes he got in the way, but mostly he was -- as Airedales tend to be -- interested in what I was doing. The shell was the subject of several Colden Daily Images, as was Radar.
