Weeds and olivine.

The olivines are making up what's called "green sand," and I found a few glass bottles of green sand around the house. I'm sure it came from the famous "Green Sand Beach" down at Ka Lae (South Point). My parents must have grabbed some of it a long time ago. In the old days, almost nobody knew about or went to the Green Sand Beach, not that that's an excuse. These days, it's crowded.

The beach is largely green because the waves and general weathering have eroded cliffs made of compacted sand and olivine (which is of volcanic origin).

I scattered some in the zen garden, to see whether it would be interesting. It wasn't, but sand scattered on gravel is not going to be taken up and put back in its jar easily. Eventually it will wash down into the gravel.

This is a severe crop. Someday I'll go right down to 1:1 with the camera itself, but I didn't feel like it today.
